In 2018, the American Geophysical Union awarded Sen. Cory Gardner (CO) with a Presidential Citation. The decision was controversial due to Sen. Gardner's record of statements denying climate science.

An audiotape of an interview with Sen. Gardner, published in the Huffington Post on October 7, 2020, records the Senator peddling anti-science conspiracy theories and refusing to recognize the role of human activities in climate change.

As an organization that is supposed to defend science and represent Earth scientists, it is incumbent upon AGU to rescind the Presidential Citation is awarded to Sen. Gardner. This is the only way that AGU can send a clear and unequivocal message that it supports the science of climate change and that it condemns conspiracy theories that undermine scientists studying climate change.

We, the undersigned demand that AGU correct the error it made in 2018, rescind the Presidential Citation to Sen. Gardner, and strongly condemn his equivocations and obfuscations regarding climate change. This is the only way for AGU to stand with its membership in condemning conspiracy theories regarding the greatest challenge facing humanity.
