There exists an apparent bias in medical anatomy books and literature regarding female anatomy. Male anatomy is well documented, studied and understood in comparison to female anatomy. For example, pictures and models of the female orgasm-organ the clitoris is largely unrecognizable to almost every woman because it is not presented in educational material and remains relegated to a taboo subject. In further studying normal female genital anatomy there are other structures of female anatomy that are largely ignored, such as the Bartholins Glands. These mucous producing glands sit below the clitoris vestibules and are named after the physician who first described them or “discovered” them.
We feel that the nomenclature of female anatomy be reassigned to the names of medical professionals who advocate for better understanding of female health; and that the established nomenclature be abolished as it is inherently misogynistic for female body parts to be named after a man who claimed them as a discovery.
I propose that the Bartholins Glands be renamed De Costa Glands to reflect the value of advocating and advancing female health.
