Durags, wave caps and bonnets are a specific type of headwrap, worn by people of color to maintain a specific hairstyle and protect hair. This concept is no different than the hair ties, bobby pins and headbands I as a white woman utilize to attain a specific hairstyle or appearance. The reality of our past and present community standards is that anything associated with people of color is over-policed, poisoned by negativity, and associated with violence, aggression, or opposition. Projecting these stereotypes and characterizing mannerisms of the black culture as unacceptable has real-life consequences on esteem and identity. It is critical for the well-being of children that we evaluate policy and are intentional and considerate of how we counteract stereotypes and provide children a safe place to express themselves. Normalizing headwraps in educational spaces is a strong way to challenge these stereotypes.
