Condemn the use of solitary confinement in prisons

Solitary Confinement is a form of punishment used in this age of the "Prison Industrial Complex". With such high rates of recidivism and the US incarcerating 25% of the world's prisoners, it leaves 1/4 of the population is locked up. Tactics like solitary confinement are extremely detrimental in our prisons where a majority of prisoners are either facing a mental illness coming into the system or leave the criminal justice system with a damaged mental state and the lasting affects of their experience that is supposed to somewhat rehabilitate them. Over 50% of the women incarcerated in the U.S. suffer from mental illness. Solitary confinement can be damaging to all types of prisoners-men, women, children- but women and transgender women are especially vulnerable to abuse and suffering lasting affects of being physically and mentally neglected. This type of isolation and lack of human interaction can be extremely detrimental to an inmate when they get released and try to re-enter society as a productive citizen and human being. With women being the fastest growing population in the criminal justice system in the United States today, it's important to condemn this tactic of punishment used in our prisons and open our eyes to the dangers solitary confinement poses to both human beings individually(such as women) and humanity and our society as a whole. In a system where both recidivism and mental illness are extremely common, this is the last form of punishment we should be using in the "rehabilitation" of our citizens.
