Why this petition matters

Started by Matt A

The 1L students in the Dual JD Program of the University of Windsor and the University of Detroit Mercy are requesting that Summer 2022 Classes have BOTH an online and in-person option.

The decision to mandate students on either mode of learning is unequitable. It endangers certain students, faculty as well as staff. The pandemic has disproportionally affected students from low income backgrounds, marginalized communities, disabilities, health concerns (for themselves or their families).

Most students are on significant lines of credits to pay for their education. The Dual JD program costs nearly $50k CAD in tuition alone - which is the same amount the highest student Line of Credit provides. By mandating and forcing students to be in Detroit for two classes, students are losing a huge opportunity to save up, gain work experience and it also forces them to find housing accommodations and paying more with the money they don't have.

Conversely, for the students that want to be in-person. The classes can't be made fully online either. Some students are lucky to have no financial or even health pressures which allow them to pursue in-person options freely. Therefore, they should have an in-person/hybrid option as well.

We are humbly requesting that the ABA, UDM and UWindsor provide the educational flexibility that they have generously provided for students during 1L.
