I am currently serving on the board of directors of a small, non-profit museum It is important to make all candidates aware of the salary range of all positions. Sadly, as a non-profit, the salary range is what often scares candidates away. I'd love to see someone start a petition calling for greater funding for the arts.

If museums want to be the leaders of change and innovative practices, they need to encourage emerging professionals from different backgrounds to apply for their positions. Increasingly, many positions that require extensive qualifications and work experience are either unpaid, part-time, or on a casual basis and after going into debt paying for my tuition, I simply cannot afford to pursue those opportunities. It is unfair to the applicants who put the time and energy into their applications for the organisations not to disclose such details.

I used to work for AAM. It's an important resource for museums. Requiring salary ranges is a great way for AAM to be a leader and continue championing both museums and their staff.
