Amend the dress code

Amend the dress code
Why this petition matters
Recently, our school has begun cracking down on (near exclusively) girls for violation of the dress code. In the incredibly warm weather, girls are being sent home or pulled out of class for wearing tank tops or shirts that go past their shorts. The district has failed to provide any sort of logical explanation for this, leaving us to assume that the message is that girls’ bodies are too sexual. These types of clothes have been described as “distracting,” despite the boys at our school showing widespread support for a more liberal dress code. It is incredibly easy to not stare at people, even if they are showing their legs, shoulders, waist, or cleavage. It’s a non-issue that the district is using to justify telling girls to cover up. I, as well as the dozens of people supporting this cause, believe every person at our school who has had their body sexualized has the right to present themselves how they please, without being told they are a distraction. I make this petition as a contribution to the posters and respectful protests at my school, in hopes that it will lead the administration to grant more liberty to the students being unfairly targeted for their bodies.
Proposal: the Victor High School Code of Conduct should be amended or less strictly enforced, to the point of particularly girls having more liberty in how they dress. We agree that neither male nor female breasts should be overexposed, and shorts should at least expose nothing more than legs. However, reasonable exposure of shoulders, thighs, waists, and some cleavage should be allowed, particularly in the hot weather.
