Suwon became a Sister city with Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, in November 3, 2015.
Culture, art, high-end shops, high tech companies, including the headquarters for electronics giant Samsung, can be found within the city of Suwon; regrettably, so can the dog meat restaurants and so-called ‘health centers,’ places where horribly abused and brutally slaughtered dogs and cats are served up as food and drinks.
In South Korea, there are countless dog slaughterhouses, markets, and restaurants where the dogs, who have been tortured their entire lives, end up being slaughtered in the most inhumane ways, such as by electrocution, hanging, stabbing, beating; and then thrown into boiling water – sometimes while they are still alive. In many places, dogs are being killed in full view of other terrified, caged dogs; and this takes place in public and broad daylight. In addition, many abandoned and stolen former pets end up in this industry and are subject to the same cruelty.
We cannot stand by while Suwon continues to deceive us and inflict unimaginable cruelty on animals who consider humans guardians and companions. So we are now asking the Freiburg im Breisgau government to urge Suwon to stop the dog and cat meat industry in their city – an illegal, brutal, and diabolical industry.
