Amend Municipal Elections Act so that contributions must be from municipal residents only
Why this petition matters
In Ontario municipal election campaigns, there is a problem with people contributing to election campaigns in municipalities in which they do not live. This means that a municipal candidate could receive up to 100% of their funding from NON-RESIDENTS. We would not condone citizens of another country giving money to Federal political parties, nor would we tolerate residents of Manitoba or Quebec donating money to Provincial political parties. So, why do we allow NON-RESIDENTS of a municipality to influence the outcome of the election? You can only vote where you have your principal residence. Therefore, you should only be allowed to contribute, financially, to an election in the municipality in which you live.
The amendment is a very simple one, only it requires the change of Section 88.8 (3) from "normally resident in Ontario" to "resident of the municipality".
