A Fair Up-To-Date Dress Code For Amelia EarHart Middle School
“At Amelia Earhart, we want Equal Rights for all.” Yet the dress code is showing otherwise… Girls and Boys aren’t being treated fairly. All the students aren’t, for that matter. And before I go into detail as to why the dress-code needs to be updated, we all can agree That every school needs a dress code. For obvious reasons like so students don’t go to school wearing completely inappropriate/Very Revealing Clothing. But what I don’t understand is why they need to ban things like Belt chains, Shoulders, Tank tops Etc…
For starters, The girls are being told to “cover the shoulders!” because it’s ‘distracting’ to the boys. The reason I’m saying it’s distracting to the boys, is because if they were concerned about it being distracting to the other girls, they wouldn’t have us girls change into our P.E. cloths in front of each other. In my opinion, changing in front of other girls is worse than Showing a bit of shoulder. I also believe that boys showing their shoulders is more “distracting” than girls showing their shoulders because typically, with today’s “trends” boys work out, and gain muscle on their arms. Which to another person is far more attractive and distracting than a girl’s shoulders.
I also wanted to go over the school forcing students to do what the school wants. If we go back to elementary school, they tell you a few dress code rules on the first day of school, like no wearing anything with foul language, nude, politics etc. Then they move on. You don’t see them forcing students to write the dress code rules down, and then forcing them to sign a paper saying they’ll never wear A crop top, or forcing them to take a test rewriting the rules. Well Amelia Earhart is forcing their students to do just that. Don’t you think that’s a little extreme?
The crop top rule is another issue I have. Why girls are told to not wear crop tops I understand, but they take it a bit far. For example, My friend and I were walking in P.E. Class (To set the scene she was wearing a crop top that showed less than an inch of her stomach, and only when she put her hands in the air. She was also wearing a long sleeve flannel shirt to “cover up” and high waisted jeans.) Then a teacher comes up to her and tells her to lift her hands up in the air to see if her crop top showed her stomach. Obviously, if you lift your hands up in the air, your shirt will go up a bit too. But if the school doesn’t want you showing your stomach, why would they ask you to do something that will reveal your stomach, only to dress code you.
All I’m asking of the school, is to make a fair dress code. Students should be able to wear what they want, while being able to still dress appropriately. If you want to support Lulu Stange and Jersie Collette’s Protest, sign this petition to help students to be treated equal!
