Problem
There is a loophole in the law which means that child maintenance can not be enforced should you be in the forces. It is called deductions of earnings request. It can be denied leaving families in ruin who rely on that money.

Solution
Child maintenance should be mandatory and there should be no loop hole in the law. No one is above supporting their child whether you are deployed or not.

Personal story
I am a single mother, working part time and funding myself through a diploma in Counselling. I rely on maintenance money to support my child.
My ex partner is a Major helicopter pilot in the British Army. He has since married and had two further children. He has nothing to do with my son. Their family have disowned him due to being born out of wedlock. Even getting them to pay maintenance has been a struggle. After months of battling and getting my local MP involved, a deductions of earnings request was set up. He was in arrears by thousands at this point.
After a review was performed at Child Maintenance Service, the new deductions of earnings request was denied. My son went without a birthday present because I can barely pay my bills. Christmas is round the corner and I haven't paid my rent for two months. I rely on that money. It was denied because he was deployed.
His wife and children are getting free trips to Lapland UK via little troopers charity, while my son potentially won't have a roof over his head after Christmas. All I ask is for what he rightfully should have. His dad should still have to support his son no matter where he is.
