We believe the current laws on domestic abuse are out of date and ineffective.
Did you know, for example, there is no actual law for ‘domestic abuse’ despite the fact that there are an estimated 1,4 million cases against women every year in England and Wales alone (and the number is rising fast)?
With no actual domestic abuse law as such, each separate incident of violence or abuse must be reported to the police separately.
As it stands, to report a common assault (or ABH), it has to be within six months of an incident taking place. However, in many abusive relationships (including my own), incidents are not reported at the time in order to protect the relationship and/or abuser.
Also, women in abusive relationships are often too scared to report assaults to the police until they have escaped their abuser. Again, in many cases (including my own) it is too late.
There is a new law against ‘coercive control’, but this is very difficult to prove, and not many convictions are being made.
We want the law changed so there is either an overall law against the crime of ‘domestic violence’ or the length of time allowed to report individual incidents is extended.
