Borneo and other places are burning, and critical orangutan habitat is being destroyed to meet demand for palm oil in the West, as farmers clear jungles to grow the crops for this ubiquitous ingredient. Whole Foods had a big hand in introducing palm oil into the Western food supply—and holds the key to removing it.

Whole Foods began adding palm oil to their products in the early 2000s—a relatively rare tropical oil in the US at the time—and marketing it as a natural alternative to artificial trans-fats. Semi-solid at room temperature, it made peanut butter stay creamy in the jar without the oil separating like other natural nut butters, and therefore was a key ingredient to their Whole Kids Peanut Butter. That was the entry point. The ingredient then went on to take the place pretty much anywhere trans-fats might be used; breads, pie crust, pizzas, etc. And it spread rapidly to other natural and organic foods producers throughout the following decade. Today it's everywhere, and essential forests are burning to meet demand.

Palm oil is still being used in Whole Foods products to this day, despite ample information for years about the devastating impact it's having on the environment. Therefore, Whole Foods should immediately take steps to phase palm oil out of their products and add it to their list of unacceptable ingredients so that it won't find any shelf space in their stores in the future. The industry will follow their lead.
