Why this petition matters

After Brexit, Amazon customers in the Republic of Ireland are in the awkward position of being served with Amazon Prime benefits by a non-EU member, which renders one of the main benefits of Amazon Prime (i.e. free priority delivery), moot due to the introduced import fees between UK and the EU/EEA.

Other EU/EEA countries like Luxembourg, Austria and Scandinavian countries are serviced with Amazon Prime benefits from Amazon EU-based sites, such as amazon.de or the new amazon.se site.

This petition kindly asks for Amazon to shift the site servicing the Republic of Ireland with Amazon Prime products and services from amazon.co.uk to an Amazon EU site, such as amazon.de.

Full background

With the United Kingdom's complete withdrawal from the EU (Brexit), additional costs were introduced to cover import fees when purchasing goods from Amazon's UK site with a delivery address in the EU.

While EU customers could simply start shopping in other Amazon EU sites such as Amazon France, Italy, Spain or Germany, the UK site is still the de-facto site for serving the Republic of Ireland with Amazon Prime products and services, such as Prime Video and free 2-day delivery. Therefore, Amazon Prime customers in the Republic of Ireland cannot avail from free priority delivery from other Amazon sites besides amazon.co.uk.

Since the new import fees from purchasing in Amazon.co.uk often outweigh the delivery costs  from EU-based Amazon sites, Amazon Prime members in the Irish Republic will see themselves waiving their option of free priority delivery in favour of better costs. This places Amazon Irish customers in a unique, disadvantaged position. They are now paying for a service which one of the main selling points (i.e. free priority delivery) has been rendered useless by Brexit. Returns for anything besides wrong/defective items will also be affected by Brexit. Other customer statutory rights might also be affected.

Therefore, we feel that it will be prudent for Amazon to shift their site servicing customers in the Irish Republic from the UK to an EU-based site.
