T-MOBILE, AMAZON, AND OTHER COMPANIES ARE ACCUSED OF USING FACEBOOK ADS TO EXCLUDE OLDER AMERICANS FROM JOBS.*
LET FACEBOOK KNOW THAT THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!
Three workers and a large union sued T-Mobile, Amazon, Facebook, and other corporations on Wednesday, accusing them of using Facebook’s ad targeting tools to exclude older Americans from job opportunities. [source: https://www.propublica.org/ article/facebook-ads-age- discrimination-targeting]
This is illegal and it is wrong. Ageism in the workforce is a major hurdle for older adults trying to hold onto their jobs or find new ones. Two out of three people between ages 45 and 74 say they’ve seen or experienced age discrimination at work, and job seekers over age 35 cite it as a top obstacle to getting hired. [source: https://www.aarp.org/work/on the-job/info-2017/age- discrimination-facts.html] Despite abundant evidence that age-diverse teams are the most effective, corporations are expert in skirting the law, and Facebook is making it easy for them.
Facebook’s defense—that their employment ads reach all ages and that age targeting “may not in itself be discriminatory”—is patronizing and dismissive. [source: https://newsroom.fb.com/news/h/addressing-targeting-in-recruitment-ads/]
Tell Facebook that ageism is as unacceptable as racism, anti-semitism, and sexism et. al. by signing and circulating this petition.
