People residing in Alaska are at an extreme disadvantage when it comes to shipping times for items ordered from Amazon, to include those who have Amazon Prime memberships. It is an especially profound disadvantage in Interior Alaska, and in any city that is not close to Anchorage or other port cities. Items to be delivered to smaller cities like Delta Junction and Tok, wait at a minimum, an extra 2 days once their orders arrive in Fairbanks.

This has been an ongoing issue for years. Many who use Amazon for their needs have turned to alternative online companies with faster shipping times at no extra cost to the customer. With Amazon being a multi-TRILLION dollar company, it can be safely assumed that the financial loss will be marginal and insignificant.

For examples of the vast differences in shipping to the Lower 48 versus Alaska, read on.

Example 1: I am a Prime member residing in Delta Junction, Alaska. I ordered an item from Amazon Prime on April 30, with a guaranteed delivery date of May 3-5 (arbitrary dates). The item is not shipped until May 4, only 1 day before the latest delivery date. The item takes 3 days to arrive in Fairbanks. I then have to wait an additional 2 days before the item is delivered to my post office for pickup. The item arrives 4 days past the initial guaranteed delivery date. The whole process takes 9 days and the item arrives well past the initial guaranteed dates.

Example 2: I am a Prime member residing in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. I have ordered the same item on the same day. My item ships within 24 hours and arrives 2 days after it ships. The whole process takes 3 days and the item arrives on time.

Amazon should be treating all orders with the same expediency, regardless of their destination. The convenience of shipping items out within 24-48 hours should not be a luxury only afforded to those within the contiguous United States. Amazon holds orders until the last possible moment, and then adjusts the expected delivery dates from the initial dates given when items are ordered. Alaskans deserve better than this, and without having to pay hundreds of dollars extra in shipping costs.
