Reduce the restrictions of dress code in AISD

Numerous students throughout the world are taught to “cover-up”. They’ve been taught that their body can cause issues in others and that it is their responsibility to prevent that. We are not the issue. Our bodies are not the issue. The issue here is the fact that our bodies are considered “distracting” in the first place. We believe there are many faults within this dress code that need to be addressed such as the targeting of those who dress feminine, body sexualizing/shaming, the claim of a “distraction-free” environment, and so much more.
Recently Caprock High School has enforced the dress code to the point where the slightest bare skin on your stomach is considered inappropriate. It has gotten to the point where teachers will pull you out of class to “prevent distractions”, when in reality all they’re doing is being a distraction to YOU and YOUR education. This doesn’t just happen at Caprock. It happens almost everywhere. Time spent dress coding a student, could instead be spent with their student doing the assignment. Even those of masculine energies can agree when it is said that the dress code is discriminating those with a feminine style.
Everything leads back to your mindset and how you view things. We understand the basic rules of dress code such as no lingerie, gang associated clothing, clothing items referencing topics such as alcohol, drugs, and etc. But why is it so important to faculty members that our shoulders are covered up? Why is it such a big deal that someone wants to wear a tank top with shorts that don’t reach past their fingertips on a day of 100 degrees? We don’t ask to abolish dress code but rather make a compromise and allow us to express ourselves without the paranoia of being dress coded just because of our bodies, no matter what shape, showing skin. We ask that the school board take into consideration how we feel about the dress code. Not just us but majority of the district.
