To our trusted leaders of Alverno,

We are writing to you regarding the recent increase in tuition. We understand that the decision was made to raise tuition prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we want to express our feelings on the act to continue with the increase. Many institutions of higher education throughout the country are accommodating their students by providing a temporary decreased tuition or a tuition freeze. We as students feel it is unfair to raise the tuition during such a troubling time. Many of us are struggling to pay our bills at home, let alone our tuition.

COVID-19 has been a difficult time for so many of us. You have many students working in the healthcare field, trying to help those suffering from the virus. You have students who have lost jobs and are unable to pay their rent. We feel that it is not the “Alverno Way” to continue with a tuition increase in such a time. We feel it is unjust.

Many of your students will not be able to pay for this semester due to the tuition increase and the effects of COVID-19, which will lead to lower enrollment for the college the following semester. Some students have attempted to reach out to faculty and have had meetings to address their concerns, but we feel there is nothing being done to help us as students. Alverno is all about helping each other, and right now our students are struggling.

Over the summer, we were promised in person classes. Many of these students that had signed up for in person classes are now forced to be online or hybrid. The communication gave us a false sense of hope. We relied too much on the meeting with health professionals and did not have back up plans. We have students who did not find out their instructors until two days before class began.

Many students taking online classes do not even have zoom lectures. Even the nursing students! Many students do not have voice over PowerPoints. We feel as though we are teaching ourselves. We understand our professors are here for us and are willing to set up individual zoom meetings or answer questions through emails. However, this is not the same quality education we were receiving prior to the pandemic. Not every student can properly learn this way. We should not expect students to be able to adapt to self-taught learning and pass their courses. The price of our education is far too high for the quality of education we are receiving.

We are strongly urging you to decrease the tuition until COVID-19 passes over. We are not getting the same quality of education as we would in person, and it is unfair to many of us who are struggling due to unforeseen circumstances. Again, we understand this decision was made prior to COVID-19; however, changes need to be made in order for students to continue with their education. The cost is simply too high during a time like this.

Thank you for taking the time to hear our concerns.
