Change is good. However, the potential sacrifice of decades and decades of tradition is disheartening and unnecessary. The Sailor Majorettes stand apart from the crowd. In a world of leotard-wearing twirlers and skimpy outfits, the sailor majorettes have maintained an original, traditional and classic look since the mid 1900s. As an alumni majorette, I couldn't wait for the day that I could put on that uniform.
Just as when we were challenged with the potential to take down the Vermilion water tower, our sailor uniforms are being threatened. These things are symbolic of being a Vermilion alumni and resident. Please help us to save our uniform that has been passed down for generations. It means something to the sailor alumni and the greater vermilion community.
Food for thought: As teenagers today are self-conscious about their bodies and sexuality, the classic sailor majorette uniform allows people all shapes, sizes and genders to participate in an extracurricular activity. A smaller uniform may alienate groups of students.
