The new attendance policy limits the reasons for excusal by parents for student absences. The circumstances that allow for excusal are reduced to documented excuses. However, this should not be the case because there are many reasons one might miss school and not have the needed documentation. For example, if a student got a minor sickness, they are now forced to either go to the doctor and charge their insurance, or going to school and risk the spread of said disease. The new policy will result in far more work for counselors and principles because many more students will be receiving "No Grades". Although missing school may correlate to worse grades, the new policy is far too restricting. If a parent/guardian excuses the absence, there is either a valid reason or neither the parent or student cares about attendance.

I believe the solution to this problem is keeping the attendance policy the same. As stated previously, if the parent/guardian does the work to excuse the absence, there is reasoning for it. Either there is a legitimate reason, or they don't care about attendance and the "No Grade" won't affect them. Keeping the policy the same allows for students to be accountable for themselves while still having the freedom of being in high school.
