End the tax exemption applying to aviation fuel
Please ask Alok Sharma, President of COP26 to call on world leaders to take bold action on climate change by removing the tax exemption applying to aviation fuel.
At present aviation kerosene which is used in jet engines is exempt from tax in the UK, and in most countries around the world. The favourable tax treatment can be traced back to the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation of December 1944, which was intended to promote reconstruction and international co-operation at the end of World War II. The world has moved on since 1944 and it would now be a powerful demonstration of international co-operation in the fight against climate change if world leaders were to agree that it is the right time to remove the tax exemption. Removing the exemption would provide a strong incentive for airlines to reduce carbon emissions.
Due to the global nature of aviation, it is difficult for countries to act individually in taking action to reduce carbon emissions from flying. As President of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) taking place in Glasgow, Alok Sharma has an opportunity to show global leadership by encouraging world leaders to take bold decisions, so that “building back better” can become a reality rather than an empty slogan.
