Allow Virginia's public school performing arts students to perform

We have prevailed!

Dear Arts Education Advocates~

It is with great pride and excitement that we share the latest update on our advocacy work to influence the Governor's Executive Order 72 regarding the inequities to our school performing arts students.

At the Governor Northam’s 2:15 p.m. Monday press conference (minute 17:50 if you care to watch), he addresses that performances will follow the 100/30% of capacity for indoor and 500/30% capacity for outdoor.

While we await the official word from the Virginia Department of Education to our division superintendents, feel free to share this information as appropriate with superintendents, principals, colleagues, parents, etc.

It is with deepest appreciation that we thank YOU, Virginia’s performing arts community, for your advocacy efforts. Nearly 12,000 people have signed this petition and many have emailed the Governor, his cabinet, state delegates, and other state officials. This could not have happened without our collective voices!

We must also take the time to thank those in positions of power that  supported our cause. PLEASE -- if your state delegates emailed on our behalf, send them a thank you letter or give them a shout-out on social media.  Email the Governor your appreciation for listening to our collective voices and acting upon our request. I’m sure he would be happy to receive a “nice” letter!!

This has been one of the most difficult years for arts (and public) education. And we are certain there will be struggles ahead as we fight through the impacts of the pandemic. BUT today, we should be proud knowing that our solidarity and tenacity has accomplished an important goal, elevating our voices to fight for what is right for our students.

Thank you for you advocacy efforts and commitment to arts education and our students. You inspire us.

With sincere thanks,
