Today in class I was informed by a school staff member, that there is a regulation in place stating that staff members within the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) are no longer allowed to refer to transgender and gender-diverse students as their preferred name, and must refer to their legal names unless otherwise stated by the students parents. Including staff who have previously referred to the student as their preferred name. 

This is unacceptable! The majority of students who identify as a gender that does not match their sex assigned at birth are not out to their parents. Not using the correct name and pronouns for every student is detrimental to their education and their mental health, and often puts them at a greater risk for bullying, being kicked out of their homes, self-harm and suicide.
