Like many students at Penn State, I wanted to take sign language as my foreign language requirement. However, sign language does not count in that area. I know many people who wanted to take sign language but had to take another language instead due to this policy. Not only would changing this policy make many students more likely to take sign language classes, but as a student with hearing loss, I would love to see the communication barrier between the abled body community and the deaf and hard of hearing community lessen. If students had the opportunity to learn about our culture for credit at PSU, then the stigma against people like me would disappear.
