Allow Remote Option at San Jose State University for the Spring 2022 Semester
As a student of SJSU, we have faced difficult decisions regarding the Spring 2022 semester. As COVID-19 peaks we are being called back to campus. So the question remains what is our education worth? Should we risk death, the lasting effects of long-haul COVID, and the anxiety of putting the members of our household at risk?
As we have returned to classes this semester many professors have been adamant that they refuse to post recorded lectures when we go in-person, students who test positive are incentivized to attend lectures while being sick so they don't miss lectures. Further students are being told that they will not be entitled to make up labs or exams. The threat of penalization ensures sick students will be in attendance.
This historic event has significantly impacted my life by causing high levels of stress, anxiety, and an overall negative impact on mental and physical health.
As we head into the new school year, we need to acknowledge that this pandemic is not over yet and that students will still be impacted by its presence. Because of this, the undersigned demand that SJSU provides remote learning options to support its students.
If this solution is properly implemented, students will feel supported as they try their best to maintain good academic standing. Help us protect our health our community and our loved ones.
Do not force students to jeopardize their health and wellness with requirements to return to the classroom when the mental strain of a pandemic is still prevalent. Give us the ability to succeed this year. The determination of whether you can risk catching COVID or not should be made on an individual level. Students who value the in-person learning experience should have an option, but so should the students who don't consider in-person learning to be a vital aspect during this uncertain time. A hybrid option is the only one that makes sense, in which the class can be offered and completed both online and in-person.
By signing this petition, your voice will be heard in support of remote learning at SJSU. Let’s unite to support our community of scholars and educators!
