Hattie Sun just completed her 4th year on the SFU swim team. With only 1 year of eligibility left, SFU's new head coach decided to cut Hattie from the swim team for selfish reasons.

Hattie was voted team captain for the SFU women's team for the 2021/22 season. She organized the majority of the senior night for the senior swimmers. Hattie came to every practice with a smile and open arms. If anyone ever needed someone to talk to, they knew they could go to her.

Last summer, Hattie was the only female swimmer on the SFU varsity team to train full time through May - August. Hattie is one of the most positive, hard working girls on this swim team. She had the courage to stand up for anyone and everyone when needed, and it is because of this courage that Head Coach Demone Tissira decided to deprive her of her senior year.

Hattie had a zoom meeting with Head Coach Demone Tissira and Assistant Coach Sue Logan in early April of 2022. In this meeting, Demone described Hattie as someone who contributed very positively to the team; someone who cares so much and works so hard and always contributes to making the team environment better. He then went on to say that was not enough, and that her performance was lacking, so she was not offered a position on the team next year. Sue respectfully disagreed, standing up for Hattie and saying this is not fair. Demone had none of that, and his assistant coach's opinion went in 1 ear and out the other.

This makes no sense, and here is why: Demone said this based on 'time standards' that he made up in the last week of March. He stated that if you do not have these time standards, it is up to the coaches to decide if you get offered a position on the team, based on the needs of the team. However, Hattie was the only female on this team who was not offered a position on the team next year, and she is not the female on the team with the weakest performance.

Listed below are percentages of how close Hattie is to these 'time standards' when compared to others on the team:

Hattie (4th year): 6.1% within reach of a time

Swimmer A (2nd year): 6.7% within reach of a time

Swimmer B (3rd year): 9.1% within reach of a time

Swimmer C (2nd year): 11.7% within reach of a time

Swimmer D: (3rd year): 8.9% within reach of a time

Hattie is not the weakest performer on our team. Please keep in mind that the time standards Demone put in place were not put into place until Friday March 28th, 2022, which was AFTER the termination of the SFU varsity season. One would say that it is unfair to remove someone from the team based on time standards put into place AFTER the season.

The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year time standards are also faster than times that would qualify for the NCAA D2 championships. Being that SFU only had 3 men and 4 women qualified for the championships in 2022, this means that 25 members of the SFU swim team do not have these time standards.

So why did Head Coach Demone Tissira revoke Hattie Sun from her position on the SFU Swim team if she is not the weakest performer? Was this just an excuse?

Hattie Sun deserves to have a senior year. She deserves a senior meet, she deserves a senior banquet, and she is fully capable of performing well. Please sign this petition as an attempt to get Hattie her senior year. Hattie not swimming on SFU's varsity swim team next year is not only a loss for her, but a loss for the entire team.

Thank you.
