Allow gum in school

Allow gum in school

The Issue

I know it might sound strange to some, but for me and many others, chewing gum is more than just a habit – it's a vital tool for maintaining concentration and keeping alert during classes. The simple act of chewing helps me stay focused, attentive, and engaged with the lessons being taught. It's the movement of my jaw, the repetitive rhythm, that keeps me from drifting into drowsiness and helps me listen to my teacher effectively.

Yet, most schools have a strict no-gum policy, overlooking the potential academic benefits that it can offer. Scientific studies have shown that chewing gum can improve memory, increase attention, and reduce anxiety and stress – all of which are incredibly beneficial in an educational setting. A study published in the British Journal of Psychology found that those who chewed gum during learning tasks had quicker reaction times and more accurate results compared to those who did not.

Moreover, chewing gum has been found to increase arousal and alertness, which can be especially helpful during long periods of academic instruction. We live in a dynamic world, and some students need dynamic solutions to meet their learning needs. This begs the question: why should something as simple and effective as chewing gum be prohibited in schools?

By allowing gum in school, we can create a more inclusive environment that caters to diverse learning needs and styles. Teachers can establish guidelines to ensure that gum chewing does not disrupt the class, such as ensuring that gum is disposed of responsibly and not chewed loudly. Many schools have already successfully adopted more flexible gum policies to improve student engagement and academic performance.

Let's come together to rethink this policy. I urge school administrators to consider making a change that supports student focus and engagement. Allowing gum in schools could have a significant impact on academic outcomes and create a more supportive educational environment for everyone.
