Mr. Daniel Jensen of RHS is the clear frontrunner for the position of class of 2023 president. However, despite his campaign’s incredible success and his growing popularity among students, Mr. Jensen’s presidency is being held back by an outdated rule found in the RHS Student Government Constitution. According to Section 2 of Article ii, the class president is required to have: “Held office for at least one year on a class council...” Based on this rule, Jensen would be ineligible to run for the position of Class President in the 2020-2021 school year. Through this petition, we wish to raise awareness of this unfair rule, and show that we, the students of Ridgefield High School, will not be satisfied or content with the results of the upcoming election until Mr. Daniel Jensen is promised an opportunity to run for the position of Class President this school year. Mr. Jensen may not have the year of experience required, but why should that hold him back from being elected? If the students of RHS are willing to vote for him, they should be given the opportunity to do so, instead of being forced to vote for another candidate they have less interest in. Ultimately, it is the job of both the students and the school to employ the most qualified person in the position of president. This rule clearly restricts popular upcoming and promising candidates such as Daniel Jensen from getting equal opportunity to benefit this school. Mr. Jensen’s level of qualification to be president should not be overlooked by the fact that was not in student council for one year. The people believe Daniel Jensen is most fit to be their president; they should not be forced to settle for another candidate when they believe Mr. Jensen can do more for their school.
