Allow a score of 85% to pass Remediation Exams
As Roseman students we are held to an incredibly high standard, sometimes to a fault. Anything less than a 90% is considered a fail, while in reality an 85% would be considered a good score. This bodes well for the school when the want to highlight their "high NCLEX pass rate" and "4.0 students" however for the student this can be detrimental. During the first exam you can miss a total of 6 questions and still score a 90%, and in addition to that, if your small group passes with a 90% you are awarded 3 extra points, or 5 percent to your own exam. With this added bonus you can miss a total of 9 exam questions and still pass. When you score below a 90% you are given a chance to retake the exam. The remediation exam is often harder, has trickier questions, and since students confidence is already so low, it tends to be all around more difficult and stressful. This time, there is no opportunity for group points, nor are past group points awarded. Why? I don't think there is an answer that would satisfy any student and it seems needless that the student should be expected to score a 90% without the help of group points. If you score less than 90% again, you are forced to block remediate. This involves another 60 question exam, this time on the entire block. Due to the incredibly high fail rate of block 5 Adult health, 50% of both cohorts are block remediating and at risk at moving cohorts. This will result in students paying more money to the school due to the increase in tuition, taking out more private loans, and causing harm to young peoples credit scores and bank accounts while potentially causing emotional damage as well. While this school shows its accomplished pass rates and desire for students to demonstrate competence at a high level, it fails to be transparent about the amount of students who fail blocks and are forced to move cohorts. There is no logical reason for students to be expected to get a 90% on their own for the remediation exam when it is not expected on the first exam and there is simply no reason why the remediation exams should be more difficult, so much so that 50% still failed. Through personal experience, the Dean is very receptive to listening to student concerns and voicing them to the professors, however changes are not being made in real time. Often the changes through professor evaluations and exam questions come when the block has already been completed, or the test has already been taken, which does not benefit the current students facing these problems. Students no longer feel like these exams are a reflection of our intelligence, but simply a fault in the system that is causing HALF of the October 2021 cohort from both Henderson and South Jordan to fail. We are asking the faculty to please consider accepting past scores of 85% on remediation, allow past group points to be awarded on remediation exams, and to please consider changing the pass score for future remediation exams to 85%. This will propel students forward, lower the schools dropout rate, and increase student happiness during these incredibly stressful months as we navigate through nursing school. Overall, the purpose of this petition is to bring light to what we feel is an arbitrary rule, promote active change in the system, and to promote the livelihood of students at Roseman. Thank you for your time.
