Allow 16-Year-Old Students to Join the Workforce with Parental Consent

Allow 16-Year-Old Students to Join the Workforce with Parental Consent
The Issue
My name is a 16-year old student struggling to find part-time work due to age restrictions, despite having parental approval. As a frail individual prone to illness, opportunities in heavy labor are not accessible to me. This experience is not unique and is shared by many of my peers. We wish to contribute to our household income and gain practical work experience that might help shape our futures but are hindered by the existing age limitations. The current age limit is important to prevent child labor exploitation, but it also restricts willing and capable 16 years old teens who have the consent of their parents to work. In the United States, 1.3 million 16-19-year-olds are actively engaged in the workforce, highlighting the capacity and willingness of young individuals to work. Moreover, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 5.1% of working adolescents were in the food preparation and serving sector in 2020, indicating that with the proper controls, underage workers can positively contribute to the fast-food industry. Our petition demands that local regulatory bodies and legislative creators reconsider the current age restriction, allowing 16-year-old students to work in the fast food and other industries, provided they have parental consent, and ensure their rights and protection against exploitation. We urge for your support to broaden opportunities for young individuals eager to work. Please sign and share this petition to make the change happen.
