I’ve always loved and supported the YMCA/YWCA gym at the Carlingwood shopping centre in Ottawa because they have an incredible workout facility. However, I have noticed that paper towels have been excessively used in this workout facility for wiping down workout machines and then they go straight to the garbage. Why do we continue using paper towels when we could bring our own towels or ask the facility to replace paper towels with reusable ones? Using paper towels causes pollution from the factories that make them and more pollution from the transportation it takes to bring them to the gyms. Furthermore, many paper towels are made of virgin trees from sustainable forests, and when virgin trees are cut down, the ecosystems can collapse. No amount of replanting trees will save these ecosystems. Enough is enough. As we continue to see the horrendous effects of climate change, it’s time to take action and minimize our unnecessary waste as much as we can. Lots of other gyms, including other YMCA/ YWCA branches offer reusable towels, so this facility should too. We can do this by asking the YMCA/YWCA at the Carlingwood shopping centre to remove the paper towels, or replace them with reusable towels. Sign this petition to help create a greener future for our world.
