Like many others, I have a severe nut allergy. I carry two Epi-pens of adrenaline and have been prescribed Fexofenadine antihistamines.
Changes to food labelling have now been in place since December 2014. They help provide allergen ingredients information in a clearer and more consistent way. For example, any of the 14 allergens that are on the regulatory list are to be emphasised on the label of a pre-packaged food if they are used as ingredients. However, many companies still use the wording 'may contain traces of nuts' or 'packaged in a factory handling nuts' to cover themselves. Not helpful for the sufferer when even a pot of Coleslaw opposes a risk. I've also had to question some menu errors in restaurants where nuts are present in the dish such as Pesto but the dish states it's 'nut-free' indicating that it's safe to eat....
...as if that wasn't hard enough, we are then faced with having to google Latin names for ingredients of shampoos, conditioners, hair straightening balm, body moisturiser, sun creams, shaving gel, eyeliners and make-up in general. Making a simple trip to the shops a long task of hours. I've had breakouts and been ill recently and just discovered that most of my bathroom cabinet contain forms of nut oils. This is why I have started this petition after a day of searching for something safe to use to keep up good hygiene. Please sign this petition, there are many allergies out there but only a few so serious as they can kill.
