Mark Elenbaas started this petition to Allendale Township Board

The Civil war Statue in Allendale Depicts the story of the Civil War. American Fought American, creating great suffering for all involved but the end result was the freedom of slaves. Something to be celebrated.

The entire Statue is one piece containing a union soldier, a confederate soldier and a young slave boy holding a paper declaring freedom for slaves and was designed by Joyce Sweers.

The intention in designing the statue with the Confederate soldier back-to-back with a Union soldier was “to depict their differing views,” according to Sweers

“I placed a small child between the two soldiers not to demean the slave or condone slavery but to represent what was the most significant result of the conflict of these two sides and that is the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation,

For over 20 years these cement sentinels have stood watch but now, suddenly forces from outside of allendale have decided that this statue commemorates the confederacy. It does not. It is not a confederate statue. It would be difficult to tell a story of the civil war if there was no confederacy.

Please help Allendale fight against Angry mob rule demanding the statue be removed. What Allendale does should not be dictated by outside forces.
In recent months the statues has been vandalized several times by this angry mob causing great damage. KEEP THE STATUE!  with any luck we might be able to also have it repaired.
