Carla Walsh started this petition to All UK Suppliers of Nappies and Incontinence Products

I am a parent-carer. Many of us have experienced difficulties in finding suitable incontinence pads for our children who also have physical and/or Learning Disabilities after out-growing the largest size of infant nappies such as Libero™ Size 7, Pampers™ Size 8 etc.

Parent-carers and children & young people are asking for more options for incontinence products that provide comfort, reduce time for care and maintain the child or young person’s dignity.

The limited number of products that are already on the market are not suitable for many children, with the double tab design often proving to be a poor fit and the pull-up design being geared towards toileting independence and bed wetting.

Many parent-carers and children & young people, into adulthood, talk about how they must just ‘make do’ with what manufacturers offer and feel that much more needs to be done in order to create ‘in between’ products that fill the gap between infant nappies and adult incontinence products.

We are asking for:

·  Nappy suppliers to consider offering nappies of the existing, single-tab design in larger sizes to suit older children

·Incontinence product suppliers to develop more styles and sizes of incontinence products to better cater for children

The trouble that many of us have come across include:

· The double tab design offered by most manufacturers can be a poor fit for many children, often causing blisters and cuts while in use.  Moving up a size resolves cuts and blisters, but then results in an ill-fitting product that creates leaks.

· Other designs such as single tabs, belts and adult incontinence pants are not available in sizes that are small enough to fit many children who have outgrown standard nappies.

· Going from nappies to incontinence products, there seems to be a large increase in pad width and rise, with nothing in between to bridge that transition and this needs to be considered.

· Children and young people’s pull-ups can be a much better fit, however children’s incontinence products tend to be aimed at toilet training and bed wetting and do not provide adequate absorbency or protection for children who are doubly incontinent, and that needs to be looked at and considered.

Please consider the sensitivity of this petition and consider what you would do in these children and young person’s shoes when posed with very few options for not only comfort, but also hygiene and dignity.  Our children and young people deserve much better.
