rename Russell building to McCain/Levin Building
rename Russell building to McCain/Levin Building
The United States Senate has chosen to name one of its three office buildings after Richard Russell. Mr. Russell was an ardent segregationist. He did everything in his power to defeat the Civil Rights Act. The Russell Senate Office Building is a stain on our capitol.
John McCain was a giant of the Senate. We recently lost another giant in Carl Levin. One was a conservative Republican. The other was a liberal Democrat.. Despite their different political philosophies Senators McCain and Levin had the greatest respect for each other. They often worked together for the common good of the United States.
We hereby petition the Senate to remove the Russell name from Senate office building and rename the building the McCain/Levin Senate Office Building. Renaming the building would be a symbol of the ideals of our democracy.
