Our Son, Brother, boyfriend and friend took his own life by jumping off the Bolte Bridge on Wednesday the 11th of May, 2017. A young vibrant and talented 25 year-old who had no history of depression. This was no usual suicide. He did not show any warning signs or premeditated planning. He lived a fulfilled life and had dreams, ambitions and came from a loving, supportive family. We believe this could have been prevented by making it impossible to climb over the low railing along The Bolte Bridge, Melbourne.
This is not an isolated event; deaths and horrendous injuries from suicides and attempted suicides are happening on the Bolte Bridge far too often and easily.
According to studies on the Westgate Bridge, since the installation of the suicide barriers, the rate of suicides have decreased by 85% (Coman, Meyer & Cameron, 2000).
Transurban is the company responsible for maintaining the Bolte Bridge. It is their responsibility to ensure the safety of the public using this bridge. We need to rally together to put the pressure on this multimillion dollar company and have them install barriers, netting, procedures and other deterrents as soon as possible.
We do not want to see another family lose a beautiful loved one at the hands of this bridge.
Please share this and spread the word!
