Don Lindsay started this petition to All residents likely to be affected by the proposals

At a consultative meeting hosted by the DOI on 6th July they gave three reasons for their radical, disruptive and costly proposals for Tromode Road:

1.      Overcoming existing problems – road surface, flooding, road layout & associated danger factors

2.      Promotion of the Government’s Active Travel proposals

3.      The need to anticipate significant increased traffic flows following the development by Hartford Homes on the Drinkwater land bordering Tromode Woods, The Falls and Braddan Road/Port e Chee (300+ houses). The intention being to provide an additional exit/access road via The Falls Residential Estate.

Whilst most of those attending appeared sympathetic to 1) there appeared strong opposition to 2). With several objectors expressing their concerns including but not limited to the suggestion that mothers with prams / small children and the disabled should be using the same small ‘space’ as cyclists travelling in both directions and to propose that cyclists / pedestrians should have priority when crossing existing road junctions, could well be a recipe for disaster.  The inclusion of bus stops, zebra crossings and removal of the existing hedges adjoining the football fields / Cronkbourne Cricket Club to replaced by Lime trees were greeted with equal dismay.

In relation to point 3) it was quite astonishing to hear Mr Robinson Director of Highways, state that because the Drinkwater land was included in the Plan for the East then the development will happen or something similar will happen!! Just because the land was redesignated in the Plan for the East despite opposing views, supported by a petition signed by over 300 residents of Braddan and Douglas,  strong arguments fully supported by Braddan Commissioners that the proposals were in complete conflict with the Government’s own criteria incorporated in the 2016 Strategic Plan and would add to additional traffic problems on an exiting road network ‘not fit for purpose’ does not  mean that the Hartford Homes plans will necessarily be approved.

The audience was left to believe that the costly and disruptive proposals were being put forward with only one consideration in mind and that was to provide an extension of the “Active Travel” corridors already proposed in the Hartford Homes outline development plans and provide for an access onto Tromode Road via The Falls which would be acceptable to the Planning Office and all at Government (taxpayers) expense rather than the developer.

These attempts to pre-empt arguments against developments can be seen as a cynical and costly ploy to circumvent the democratic process we like to think underpins the working of government in the Isle of Man which is simply wrong and runs counter to the usual expectations that developers will finance the various costs associated with their plans.

The DOI has promised to put the details of the presentation on the government web site shortly.  If upon review or having attended last night’s presentation or you live on roads that could be adversely affected in the future and you are against the proposals for Tromode Road and the associated Drinkwater residential development, then please consider joining this petition.

Your support is needed.

Thank you.
