Why this petition matters

American Sign Language (ASL), a visual language which allows deaf individuals to communicate with each other or with hearing individuals.

Although, there are other commonly spoken languages within the US such as Spanish or French implementing ASL within elementary curriculum would benefit the children more. Because ASL is a visual language learning this could only benefit them by sparking their creativity and making it easier for them to develop better communication skills and tactics such as eye contact, and emotional expressions, not to mention it would help with their brain development. Now they would only be learning basic signs to stimulate coordination and other aspects of how to factor their emotions. Learning basic signs at a young age will help with brain development. Another benefit would be that these younger students would be learning how to easily express their emotions which is such a big factor of elementary school curriculum.

High schools and middle schools would look slightly different. These schools would only offering the language as a course. Because there are other languages schools typically offer I find it appropriate to let the students decide which course they would want to take including ASL, even with the chances of no one signing up. There are so many students who are hard of hearing, or family members of hard of hearing, non verbal signing individuals and being able to learn ASL as a course offered within schools alone would spark others to sign up.

The benefits of learning ASL within schools would be the fact that the Deaf and Hearing communities could integrate together, it would help the youth develop better communication skills, It opens up more job offers post high school especially with the high demand for ASL Interpreters, and Leaning ASL promotes better awareness for the Deaf community and Deaf culture.

Coming from someone who has had the chance to learn ASL through my school, I can say that it has opened up a different perspective on my learning style and it has sparked interest in students to sign up for something new and exciting.
