Petitioning All pertinent decision-makers responsible for the lives of John Buehler's dogs

Spare the lives of the dogs once owned by Mr. John Buehler, now deceased, and give them every opportunity to be re-homed.

PETITIONING THE RCMP, BC CROWN COUNSEL, HONOURABLE JUDGE, THE CORPORATION OF THE VILLAGE OF VALEMOUNT, BC, THE BC SPCA, AND ANY OTHER PERTINENT DECISION-MAKERS:

Please allow Prince George Equine and Animal Rescue to continue with their care and rehabilitation of four of the five German Shepherd Dogs (Max, Zeus, Rango, Nova and Timber) seized from Mr. John Robert Buehler. Please also ensure that the dogs are provided with whatever (re)training is necessary and do whatever else is required to have them re-homed, either with or without the continued involvement of Prince George Equine and Animal Rescue. Thank you for sparing the lives of these dogs to date and please continue to give them every opportunity to be re-homed.

BACKGROUND:
On June 19, 2014, police were involved in a standoff with a man alleged to be Mr. John Robert Buehler. According to a news release, the man allegedly “set up camp at a local outdoor recreation area and was restricting access to the trails by having six unrestrained German Shepherd dogs on the property. When approached by a user of the trails requesting to have the dogs restrained, the male threatened to harm her by using the dogs. Members of the Valemount and McBride RCMP attended the location to arrest the male for uttering threats when they were subsequently rushed by the six unrestrained dogs. The male then used the dogs as a shield to prevent the police from making an arrest resulting in a four hour standoff with police. The male was taken into custody without incident after lengthy negotiations. The dogs along with several loaded firearms and ammunition were subsequently seized as part of the police investigation.” (see http://www.caboodle.ca/provincial-news/433-valemount-standoff).

On September 17, however, the man involved in this standoff was shot and killed by the RCMP in relation to another incident. Thus, the dogs will not be returning to their owner, but it would be unfair to hold the dogs accountable for the actions of their now deceased owner. A court case is scheduled to take place in January and it is possible that an order could still be made to have the dogs destroyed as a result of being deemed dangerous. Five of the dogs were taken into care by Prince George Equine and Animal Rescue (PGEAR). One of the dogs, Nova, has since been released to live with a relative of Mr. Buehler. The sixth dog, named Seven, remains at large in the bush. Nicola Redpath of PGEAR indicates the dogs in their care have been assessed by a professional who deems the dogs capable of being re-homed. We respectfully request that all decision-makers in this case please continue to spare the lives of these dogs and give them every opportunity to be re-homed.
