Why this petition matters

Started by DC COVID-19 Pledge

There is one thing everyone can do to minimize the spread of coronavirus in the DC area. Social distance from others as much as possible.

The "leaders" around us aren't doing enough, so it's up to each of us.

"The coronavirus is coming to you.

It’s coming at an exponential speed: gradually, and then suddenly.

It’s a matter of days. Maybe a week or two.

When it does, your healthcare system will be overwhelmed.

Your fellow citizens will be treated in the hallways.

Exhausted healthcare workers will break down. Some will die.

They will have to decide which patient gets the oxygen and which one dies.

The only way to prevent this is social distancing today. Not tomorrow. Today.

That means keeping as many people home as possible, starting now." - source

We've seen the coronavirus pandemic play out across the world. The places that act quickly are able to contain it and save thousands of lives.

Unfortunately, the norm, at least in the US and DC seems to be to wait to cancel things until *after* someone tests positive.

This kind of reactive decision making isn't good enough. In order to contain the virus, we need as many people to make the hard choice to stay home if at all possible.

That's all this petition asks. Pledge to stay home from any optional gatherings or meetings if at all possible

Of course, not everyone can just stop working, pull their kids out of school, or work remotely.

But everyone can minimize their face-to-face social interactions to some extent.

As we social distance, please make sure to call, video chat, etc. with others who may be lonely.

Please pledge to forego all social gatherings that you possibly can.
