Heather Parker started this petition to All members of the community

As therapist in the mental health we have seen the hundreds of cases that come through our agency door that should’ve sought out help much sooner. The first thing that is stated when asked why they have not yet come in for treatment is that they do not want to be judged or looked down upon. As clinician and members of the community, we need to ensure that all members of our society are aware that seeking help for your mental health make you strong, courageous, and brave. We need to give all members of society education on what mental health is and the benefits of getting treatment versus the risks of not getting treatment.

We need to end the stigma of mental health so that all individuals feel as if they can get help without being judged. Its important to touch base on the fact that people don’t just have to accept one getting treatment but rather we encourage them to be curious about what treatment individuals are getting without judgement or stigma of them being uncapable. We’ve also seen the benefits of our individuals telling others about the treatment they are receiving and how this can benefit them as well or encourage that person to seek help as well.

Without the community’s efforts to end the stigma on mental health we are in turn risking the safety and health of our patient who should be seeking out treatment. We need to make sure that people are getting their mental health needs met. Without them getting the help that they need, we in turn see a higher suicide rate due to those individuals not being able to cope with what they are experiencing.

We encourage you to take a stance and end the stigma on mental health by educating yourself on mental health and reaching out to educational groups. By attending groups and asking questions you could be helping an individual who may just need to be asked “how can I help you in this moment?”
