The current attacks on Edgerton Ryerson and Sir John A. Macdonald for their part in creating the Residential School system is wrong. We are taking the attitudes and knowledge of today in judging the actions of the past which is extremely unfair. They were both products of their time and reflected the attitudes of the population at that time. Whether we like it or not, our ancestors did see the indigenous people as inferior and ignorant, and by putting the children in Residential Schools it would help them integrate into our society. Both Ryerson and Macdonald did great things during their lives and to vilify them for their attitudes which did in fact reflect that attitudes of Canadian society at that time is ridiculous. It is a form of 'political correctness'. Of course as history has shown us it was totally wrong and ruined a lot of lives, but at the time it made sense. I believe that we all need to recognize the mistakes of our ancestors, but also to appreciate that while a lot was bad, that of course a lot was good. Renaming Ryerson University is wrong and painting both Ryerson and Sir.John A as being terrible people not worth of respect is just wrong.
