American Citizens Protecting the Environment

On June 1, 2017, the United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump withdrew from the Paris Agreement. This agreement, secured in the French capital in December 2015, commits countries to curbing the rise of global temperatures. America now joins Syria and Nicaragua as the only countries that are not part of the Agreement.

Having withdrawn, the United States no longer agrees to the implementation of its voluntary commitments under the Paris Agreement, to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 26% to 28% by 2025 compared with 2005 levels, and has removed its contribution to climate finance.

Scientists have warned that failure to curb human activity proven to lead to dangerous climate change will lead to sea level rises, more intense storms and flooding, more extreme droughts, water shortages and heatwaves as well as massive loss of wildlife and reduction in crop yields, potentially sparking conflict and mass migration.

Although we cannot change our leader's actions today, we can vow to not contribute to the problem. We can each take personal responsibility for protecting the planet in individual yet significant ways. There will be many petitions asking our leaders to change. This petition instead calls for personal change and growth to protect our planet. If enough people refuse to accept the logic that "I cannot make a difference," then the difference will be very significant indeed. As Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

We, the undersigned, condemn this action which does not represent the views of the majority of Americans. We vow that in spite of our country's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, we will not contribute to the decline of future life on Earth. We vow to hold ourselves accountable for our own behaviors and further affirm that we deeply care about the future of the human species and all other life on Earth. We vow to educate those who are willing to listen, to speak our truths and to uphold the ideal of valuing the rights of future generations.
