Judge Campos,

We are reaching out to you today in regards to the significant and severe rise in COVID-19 cases this county has seen. In the last two weeks (June 17 – July 1) there has been a 334.7% increase in tested cases within county limits. More alarming is the number of very mild or asymptomatic cases that have not been tested or documented that still exist in our county and act as spreaders. Unsurprisingly, with the opening of bars, the young adult age group has skyrocketed in case numbers.

As an elected county judge who bears the responsibility of emergency management, we need you to be proactive. The people who contract the virus today may not know they have until two weeks from now and will continue going out as pre-symptomatic community spreaders. Texas as a whole has seen a tremendous spike, but Erath county can make the decision to implement measures to slow our spike and eventually lower the number of active cases to a more manageable level.

Texas governor Greg Abbott has specifically stated that county judges reserve the right to mandate the requirement of masks within business establishments for both employees and customers. We are asking you to do this as we have passed the 3 cases per 1,000 residents threshold that has been outlined by the Center for Disease Control and cited by the Erath County Emergency Management office. You have been elected to your position in which it is your responsibility to serve and protect the residents of this county, and that is what we are asking you to do.

Sincerely,

Concerned Erath county residents and your constituents
