According to The Zebra Press, ALX Now, and other sources, this week the city of Alexandria is intending to destroy a giant oak tree at TC Williams THIS WEEK. The tree is estimated to be around 150 years old, and in good health. It provides an invaluable source of shade and beauty on the school campus, not to mention its being a piece of the city and school’s history. The reason for its destruction is the creation of a new concession stand for the TC Williams football stadium. The city claims there is no other location or design which can accommodate the tree- but as is well-known, football games have been happening at the school for decades, and somehow the tree has remained in place through it all. There IS a design out there which can accommodate this piece of nature and history, and it needs to be found. As climate change warms our planet, the last thing we need is to kill such a piece of nature and history- especially for such a non-critical purpose. It would be a short-sighted, selfish, and irreversible decision. Some Alexandria citizens have already stepped up to say they will protect the tree, some even going so far as to say they will chain themselves to it. Let us show them our support and tell the city and school board NO to killing this tree.
