My name is Alex Leonard and I am a Year 11 student. I was 4 to 5 sentences away from finishing my speech that was on "The Aftermath Of Suicide". My English teacher told me that i would need to restart my speech on a topic that's completely different to suicide as the Ministry of Education has started a policy stating that, students are not allowed to speak about topics such as rape, suicide, anxiety etc in their speech assessments. Hearing that not only frustrated me for having to restart my whole speech but it also got me thinking about how ridiculous this policy really is. New Zealand has the highest rate of teenage suicide in the developed world, yet teenagers aren't allowed to talk about it. In a normal week two teenagers/children kill themselves, and just about 20 young people will be hospitalised for self-harm each week. Due to personal circumstances in my world, this subject is close to my heart and it helped me to be able to talk about it. I believe teenagers should have the freedom of speech to speak about subjects that are affecting them in everyday life.
