Dear Gordonbrock parents

Please find below a letter which we will be forwarding to Ms Gilmore in advance of our meeting with her on Feb. 12th which was scheduled to discuss how to further the benefits of the Dad's breakfast by also offering a Mum's breakfast.

We would appreciate you taking the time to read the letter and if you are in agreement, to sign the petition.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Dear Ms Gilmore

I hope this letter finds you well and thank you in advance for taking the time to meet with both my husband and I on the 12th of February to discuss how to extend the benefits of the Dad’s breakfast.

First, I would like to commend you and the school for holding a Dad’s breakfast which provides both an opportunity for the dads to learn more about their child’s development, and to demonstrate the importance of education by their sheer attendance. I know both my son and husband found the morning to be enjoyable and productive (more my husband on the latter point!).

With this said, a number of our children have, on their own, expressed some confusion about, and even challenged, why there is a Dad's breakfast and not a "parent's breakfast" or a "Mum's breakfast".  A number of parents have independently had this feedback from our kids and it has made us realise they are aware of how gender roles are being constructed around them.

When considering this along with the fact that studies unequivocally show that it is advantageous for both parents to be engaged in their child’s education, we think this is a great opportunity for the school to introduce a Mum’s breakfast. It also helps to ensure the school is encouraging a balanced and modern approach that does not reinforce poor ideas around gender roles.

I appreciate that I am ignorant in many parts of the administration of the school and perhaps lack of funding explains why this option has not been pursued in the past. Should this be the case, I am confident that we (parents and school) can find a solution if we work together.

We are asking mums and dads to sign this petition to lobby the school to introduce a Mum's breakfast in this academic year.

Thank you again for your time and attention to this important request and I look forward to meeting you soon.

Kind regards

Jennifer Flood
