Gloucestershire County Council. Change the parking permit scheme

Gloucestershire County Council is planning on introducing new parking restrictions within the Lansdown and West End areas of Cheltenham. These are due to come into effect on the 1st August 2017.

These restrictions include marked parking bays with pay and display machines and parking permit areas. The parking bays that have been marked throughout the area have already reduced where motorists can park their vehicles. From the 1st August motorists will either need to purchase a pay and display ticket to park, or have a valid parking permit.

We believe that this will have a detrimental impact on both the community and businesses. Some local businesses (e.g. local mechanics and workshops, who currently utilise on road parking) have voiced concern over how the permit scheme will restrict how they can conduct their businesses.

Many local residents have also expressed the inconvenience of having to pay to park outside of their residences. Many properties in the area have shared driveways, however, residents often end up parking on the roads as there isn't enough room to guarantee parking on the driveways. This new scheme will mean that residents who are entitled to off-road parking may still have to pay to park if there isn't enough room to park on their driveways.

We think that this scheme has not been thought out with the best interest of local residents and visitors to the area, and we call upon the county council to re-evaluate these plans. For example, the council could issue free parking permits to residents and businesses, many of whom have been able to park without issue for decades.
