Nullification doctrine holds that state governments have the power to refuse to recognize, or enforce, legislation passed by the US Congress. It is heavily related to the philosophy of state's rights which provoked the US Civil War, and formed the basis of 100 years of Jim Crow in the American South. Support for nullification is support for secession. ALEC will be meeting at the Grand Hyatt Washington (1000 H Street, NW) from 11/27-11/30. A statement from ALEC Alumni in Congress to renounce the doctrine of nullification, and revoke offending model bills, would put tremendous pressure on the group to do so.
