Get rid of plastic covering for fruit and vegetables
I am Evie and I'm 12 years old. I've cared about our planet for a while and during that time I've tried to be as eco-friendly as possible. It's extremely depressing how much damage we humans have done to the planet- litter, pollution, too much of greenhouse gases, deforestation and others. I sometimes think there is no hope for us all to change, although I also recognise all the amazing things that lots people have done and are doing for the earth. This is why I am making this petition to ask supermarkets to get rid of plastic covering for fruits and vegetables.
When I sometimes come on the weekly shop, I see bananas, apples, pears, carrots, potatoes and many other fresh produce packed in plastic bags. One of the things that upset me most are the plastic bags storing onions! There is also plastic net sacks for the citrus fruits which are just awful for the environment!
Most plastics do not biodegrade. Instead, they break down into ever smaller pieces. Single-use plastics, often do not disappear for decades or even centuries, for example, plastic film containers take 20-30 years to degrade and polystyrene takes at least 500 years to decompose! This is why we don't need packaging for our fruit and veg. Most of it has it's own naturally protective skin anyway!
So please help me get Aldi,Waitrose,Sainsburys and CO-OP to stop using plastic to hold their fruit!
